Safety Audits
A detailed Safety Audit of a machine, group of
machines, or entire production line is strongly
recommended as part of an overall risk
management and loss prevention program.

While most current machinery meets all
regulatory standards, older equipment (or
equipment that has been modified) often does
not. Further, poorly designed safety systems are
often bypassed. This creates a potentially unsafe
working condition.

The goal of a Safety Audit is to identify specific
problem areas, and to recommend cost-effective
solutions
In a Safety Audit, a machine(s) is checked against applicable OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, and
EEC standards, to determine compliance with the current regulatory standards. In
particular, checks are made against the following criteria:

- A risk assessment is performed, categorizing the various hazards into standard categories
- The machine is checked for actual use versus the design specifications.
- The E-Stop, Interlocks, and other components are checked versus current standards
- All safety circuits are verified, and checked for potential single point failures
- The safety warning labels (and related decals) are checked against current standards
- The guarding is checked for appropriateness, given the categorized hazard (from above)
- The electrical system is checked against NFPA 79.
- The control system is tested for control reliability per OSHA 1910.211
- Other safety components are evaluated for appropriateness
- Modification or changes to the original system (affecting safety) are examined.

How to Set it Up
To set up a Safety Audit, contact William S. Howard at (770) 331-2283, to arrange for a
mutually acceptable date.

In most cases, a Safety Audit can be set up in as little as one week. However, if it is
important to hold it on a specific date, it is advisable to give as much notice as possible.
